Did you know that protected natural areas cover 9% of the total surface of the Republic of Croatia? And for all of us, camping enthusiasts and nature lovers, it is especially important that we can go camping in almost 40 campsites near Croatian nature parks and national parks, which represent an ideal starting point for exploring unique natural beauties.
Along with the quality of Croatian campsites, natural beauty is one of the main reasons why many campers choose Croatia for their vacation. Preserved water areas, clean underwater and underground, wealth of flora and fauna and special climatic peculiarities, are the reasons of many Croatian natural beauties gaining a worldwide reputation. Moreover, they have become a part of protected international areas, either as national parks or as nature parks. For example, the Papuk Nature Park is included in the European Geopark Network, while the Northern Velebit National Park has been on the list of biosphere nature reserves since 1978.
Certainly, the most famous Croatian natural beauty is the Plitvice Lakes National Park, which has been listed on UNESCO's list as a world natural heritage site for decades. It includes 16 lakes and waterfalls of spectacular beauty, attracting annually over a million visitors from all over the world. This unique landscape also served as a screenplay for many movie productions, as well as for parts of the Winnetou series. In the vicinity of the Plitvice Lakes National Park, there are 4 larger campsites with varied accommodation offerings, ranging from pitches, mobile homes, apartments to houses on trees and indian tents.
Let us mention another park that will impress you with its waterfalls - Krka National Park, located in the hinterland of Šibenik. Thanks to Nikola Tesla, the first European hydroelectric power plant was built inside the park, and there is also the island of Visovac with its Franciscan monastery as well as the Monastery of Krka, the most famous Orthodox monastery in Croatia. When you are tired of swimming in the lakes of this national park, you can head to the Adriatic coast, only 15 minutes away by car. There you will come across several smaller, family-run campsites that will provide you with an ideal retreat from the summer heat and bustle.
The more adventurous campers will come to their own in the Paklenica National Park. In its surroundings, nature has created ideal conditions for mountain biking, kayaking, free climbing and nordic walking, while birdwatchers will find their spot in the Vrana Lake, Lonjsko Polje or Kopački rit Nature Parks.
When you choose to camp near these beautiful natural sites, you will surely enjoy the local gastronomic specialties and the rich historical heritage, therefore we strongly recommend that you visit these natural attractions for more than a day, otherwise you will not have enough time to feel the beauty of a certain area.
Treat yourself with a camping holiday in a unique environment that will turn your vacation into an unforgettable experience. Croatia can proud itself with its rich camping offer and you will also find suitable camping sites near most of the national parks and nature parks. Let us, at the Croatian Camping Association, help you with that!
